101 Okey rules

101 Okey is one of Turkey's best-loved tile games. You build runs and groups worth at least 101 points to open, then lay your tiles off on the table and race to finish first. On GkOkay the server checks every move; these are the rules.

Tiles, indicator and okey

  • 106 tiles: 4 colours (red, yellow, blue, black), two of each number from 1 to 13, and 2 fake okeys.
  • After the deal a tile is turned up as the indicator. The tile one higher in the same colour is the okey (after 13 comes 1) and can stand in for any tile.
  • A fake okey is not wild: it plays as the real okey's colour and number.

Deal and turns

Four players. The starting player gets 22 tiles, the others 21. The starter discards without drawing on the first turn.

Each turn you draw from the stock or take the previous player's discard, then you may open, lay off or take an okey, and finally you discard. A discarded okey can never be taken.

Opening: 101 points or 5 pairs

  • Run: 3 or more consecutive numbers of one colour (red 5-6-7). Group: one number in 3 or 4 different colours (8-8-8).
  • Your runs and groups must add up to at least 101 points; an okey counts as the tile it stands for.
  • Or open with at least 5 pairs. Runs and pairs cannot be mixed in one opening.
  • Progressive tables: each opening must beat the previous one (after 102 the next needs 103). Fixed tables: the bar stays at 101 / 5 pairs.

Laying off and taking the okey

After opening you may add tiles to any run or group on the table, such as extending a run or adding the missing colour to a group.

If you hold the real tile an okey stands for in a table group, you can swap it in and take the okey. A player who opened with pairs may only add pairs and lay off on existing sets.

Penalties (tables with penalties on)

  • Opening below the bar: +101
  • Discarding the okey: +101
  • Discarding a tile that could be laid off: +101
  • Taking a discard you cannot use that turn: +101
  • Discarding a tile someone then opens with: tile value × 10 (× 20 if they opened with pairs)

Scoring and winner

Nothing is deducted on GkOkay: the finisher writes 0 and everyone else writes the tiles left in hand. A player who never opened gets 202 (more on special finishes), and every okey left in hand is +101.

After the chosen number of hands (1, 2, 3, 5, 7 or 11) the lowest total wins and takes the whole prize. In team 101 the partners' scores are added up.
